We’ve all seen them. They’re everywhere in the religious world. They were Jesus’ worst enemies. They were responsible for his crucifixion. They hated him and all he stood for, yet they claimed to love God. Well, they did not die out 2000 years ago. The Pharisees are in full force and in leadership positions in every “church,” and the thing that most don’t realize is that any person that is exalting his or her religion above or alongside Jesus Christ is either one of them or is acting just like them. The scriptures spend a considerable amount of time showing the interaction of the Pharisees and Jesus. They were the main denomination of his day, you know, like the Catholics or Baptists of today. What I have done here is to show you the things that Pharisees believe, the things they say, and the things they do. I show you how they react to righteous people, so you just may see a lot of these characteristics in your dealings with these hypocrites. Jesus told us to “beware” of the doctrine of the Pharisees, one of the main ones being hypocrisy in religion. In this list I have given, you are going to see how scripture identifies a Pharisee for you. If you see yourself or others in this list, examine yourself to see whether you are in the faith or not. This list will help you appreciate what the Lord went through for you and me, but it will also help you to identify modern-day Pharisees and learn to avoid them. Jesus said to let them alone, for they are “blind leaders of the blind” or “blobs” for short. Though every characteristic shown here is not always indicative of a Pharisee, when taken as a whole, you begin to see the picture very clearly. If your religion is similar to theirs, then the light that is in thee may be darkness. If it is, how great is that darkness! If not, thank God you escaped from it as I did 20 years ago.
